Sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants is recognized at the European Union level as a secondary source of phosphorus. Although technologies for phosphorus recovery from municipal sewage sludge are already under development, within this action we will test an alternative method of biological phosphorus recovery. We will also test other possible technologies for processing this sludge and evaluate them with regard to the level of contamination of the sludge with pollutants. We will test pyrolysis, composting with effective microorganisms, and processing into composite construction materials for use at landfills.
Objectives: development of a pilot methodology for the processing of sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants.
Participating partners: Puconci Waste Management Centre, Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute, Jožef Stefan Institute
