C7 - Recycling Dredging Spoil for Increased Flood Safety

In Slovenian water bodies, sediment has been accumulating over the years, reducing the safety of hydroelectric dams, decreasing electricity generation, and increasing the risk of flooding. At the same time, Slovenia faces a continuous need to build and reinforce flood-protection embankments that safeguard settlements, infrastructure, and agricultural land.

Within the framework of this initiative, we will establish a permanent process for removing sediment from Lake Ptuj and preparing it for reuse as a construction material in the construction and rehabilitation of flood-protection infrastructure.

Objectives:: to establish a circular system for the continuous removal of sediments from Lake Ptuj and their use in the construction of flood-protection infrastructure. This circular approach will reduce flood risk, improve the operation of hydroelectric power plants, and at the same time reduce the need for extracting new mineral resources.

Participating partners: Dravske elektrarne Maribor, RGP Ltd., Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute, Hydroinstitute, Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy
