C6.2 – Reclamation of Mining Areas

In Slovenia, operators and concessionaires are required to remediate degraded quarry areas once they complete construction activities or raw material extraction; however, fertile soils for this purpose are often unavailable. Through this initiative, we will prepare excavated soils generated during construction works for the remediation of degraded areas and quarries. Excavated material that is not sufficiently fertile on its own will be tested within the initiative “Production of Fertile Soils for the Topsoil Layer” and, based on the results of analyses, implemented up to the level of safe use.

Objectives: remediation of two quarries using topsoil layers produced from construction waste; preparation of national recommendations for the sustainable remediation of degraded areas and quarries for all stakeholders, including companies and concessionaires holding mining rights.

Participating partners: Biotechnical Faculty – University of Ljubljana; Georudeko d.o.o.; Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute; Geological Survey of Slovenia
