C6.1 – Production of Topsoil

Materials obtained through excavation represent an important opportunity for the remediation of degraded areas, where the environmental condition is generally so poor that their use in Slovenia is being abandoned, thereby increasing pressure on natural and agricultural land. Not all materials excavated from the ground are directly suitable for the restoration of degraded areas. Through this action, we will investigate which types of soil mixtures are suitable for producing the surface soil layer, depending on the intended use of the restored area (for example, green spaces in urban areas, agricultural land, or quarry rehabilitation). We will also examine how current legislation should be adapted to make the production of fertile soils feasible in practice.

Objective: By 2028, we will prepare guidelines for the production of fertile soils for topsoil layers and for the restoration of degraded areas. The protocols and guidelines will be applicable for land managers (such as mine operators, local communities, and farms) to successfully remediate degraded sites.

Participating partners: Biotechnical Faculty – University of Ljubljana; Georudeko; Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG)
