Mining legislation requires mining companies to provide a rehabilitation plan to mitigate the effects of the degradation caused by quarrying once operations have ceased. This action will test laboratory mixtures of secondary raw materials made from recycled waste for use in backfilling the excavated areas, known as 'geotechnical layers', including a developed and laboratory-tested topsoil layer, i.e. the 'fertile layer'.
Objectives: To reclaim degraded soils in two quarries by using the developed artificial soils for both the geotechnical and fertile layers; to verify results with stakeholders.
